This week is International Women’s Day. I’ve never done much with that as I feel that women deserve to be celebrated every day, in fact everyone deserves to be celebrated every day not just on one day of the year.
What do you think? Do you agree with all these new days that we’re meant to celebrate?
International Women’s Day has, however, made me think about women through history. Did you know that women gave birth to Hollywood? During the silent movie era, women virtually controlled the industry. For example, female screenwriters outnumbered male ones 10-to-1. These mothers of creativity included writers, directors, producers and of course actresses.
Lois Weber was born in 1879 and was the first woman to write, direct, produce and star in a movie. She is regarded as one of the most important and prolific film directors of the silent movie era, directing 135 films, writing 114 and acting in 100.
Many of her films focused on her concerns for humanity and social justice, such as capital punishment, urban poverty and birth control, subjects that always troubled the establishment and she reflected these issues in her movies.
By 1920 her movies topped the highest grossing charts. One of her most notable films, ‘Hypocrites’ in 1915, featured the first full-frontal female nude scene. The British Film Censors passed the film, but it caused riots in New York and was banned in Ohio.
I had never heard of her before I stumbled across an article about her. I wonder how many other amazing women like her have disappeared into history having never been talked about or honoured for what they gave to the world?
When I was growing up, we lived next door to a house full of spinsters (their description), they were sisters and the oldest one had been one of the original Suffragettes. That started my interest in the Suffragette movement and fascination with women in history.
All women deserve to be remembered and honoured. Remember to honour yourself, because you are amazing, and the world is lucky to have you!
Until next week, keep shining your feminine light!
